In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 1:6-7 NKJV

Do you know what a crucible is? 

It’s a small hollow in a jeweler’s oven, heated to extremely high temperatures. As a silversmith or goldsmith melts precious metals, impurities are carried to the surface of the shimmering liquid. The dross, all the ugly stuff, is skimmed off by the careful craftsman. 

That’s great for making beautiful jewelry. It’s not so happy, though, when we’re the ones going through God’s crucible, His refining fire.

The trials of life are like crucibles. They can rage into our lives with distress, excruciating pain, grief, and despair. God, the master Craftsman, takes us through His purification in the process. As Christ, He has been through it Himself.

After His baptism and before He began His official ministry, Jesus Christ spent 40 days fasting in the desert…a crucible of testing. At the end of this time, Satan dared to enter the presence of our Lord at a low point of His fleshly vulnerability in physical hunger and weakness. 

When Satan offered Him worldly charms, Jesus answered calmly by speaking His own words from the Scriptures (Matthew 4, Luke 4). Finally, Satan threw a ludicrous offer to Christ, all the kingdoms of the world…as if the Lord of the universe didn’t already own everything. 

By then, Jesus had enough. “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’” (Matthew 4:10 NKJV)

Isn’t that typical of the devil’s attacks on us, too? We find ourselves bombarded by his temptations when we’re weakened by trials. Our Holy Lord endured a painful purification process that He didn’t need. On the cross, He endured an awful death that He didn’t deserve. Why?

In everything, Christ has suffered our own brokenness. He knows our flaws, how we are daily tempted by Satan. He’s been there, yet He didn’t fall into sin. He intercedes for us in the great throne room of God in heaven, pleading for grace. He tells His Heavenly Father, “Have mercy upon them, for I have walked among them and know their weakness and sorrow.” No love on earth can compare with His.

There are other Bible accounts that tell of desert crucibles. Moses worked as a shepherd for 40 years before God called him from a burning bush. Elijah endured a drought and escaped wicked Jezebel by fleeing to the wilderness. David wandered through the Arabah badlands as an outcast, hotly pursued by King Saul and his troops. After a stunning encounter with Christ, the apostle Paul disappeared for three years in the desolate Arabian territory during which the Lord prepared him for Gospel ministry and dangerous missions. All endured hardships for God to prepare them for His next steps.

Friend, are you going through a desert crucible? Has a trial caused you to stagger, feel weakened, or watch your confidence fade into doubt?

It’s very hard to see God working through times of hopelessness. When I’ve been plunged at times into a burning crucible, my trust in God’s plans has been easily submerged along with my feeble faith.

What you and I need to do is recognize He may be taking us through seasons of purification. Satan’s greatest desire is to lead us into idolatry—to take our eyes off Christ and set them on the idols of the world. In contrast, God desires to rid us of weighty encumbrances and teach us to love Him fully.

If you’re languishing in a desert trial, in a time of weakness and brokenness, turn aside from the fray to be silent and read His word. Ask God to fill you with His Spirit and presence. Submit to Him on your knees, and be still. 

Give Him time to answer your prayers. Days, months, or years may go by before He reveals His purposes. 

While you wait in this desert season, remember Isaiah’s prophecy about Jesus in verse 42:3—that He will neither break the bruised reed nor will He quench a smoking flax. He will fight against Satan for you.

If you turn to Him and place your life in His care, the Master Craftsman will reshape your heart and strip away all the ugliness. His methods may be painful, but His crucible is making you more beautiful than ever, giving you a golden faith that gleams brightly, no longer darkened by pollutants.

Always, He is making you a reflection of Himself, to shine His light to a darkened world.

Dear God, I ask You to hold my hand tightly as You take me through Your refining process. You are faithful, and You will not allow me to be tempted beyond what I am able to bear…You will make a way of escape for me. Help me to be sober, vigilant, watching and praying always, because the devil walks about like a roaring lion seeking to devour me. Teach me to count it all joy and blessing as I persevere in this trial, for when I have been approved, You will give me a “crown of life” promised to those who love You. In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
