The Privileged Life: As “Lucky” as a Six-Leaf Clover

“I rejoice at Your word as one who finds great treasure.” Psalm 119:162

Do you consider yourself “lucky”? Can you look at a bed of clover and immediately pluck out a four-leaf clover? How about a stem with more leaves than that?

My daughter, Elizabeth, found a prize this past week in our backyard…a single clover stem with six conjoined leaf petals.

Depending on which website you peruse, the odds of finding a four-leaf clover are around one in 10,000—in a section of about 12 square feet (about one square meter). That jumps to one in a million for a five-leaf find, which means that stumbling upon a six-leaf version is even rarer.

You might say my daughter is very, very lucky. She claims it isn’t luck, however, but simply training her eyes to look past the common three-leaf versions for anomalies. She found several four-leaf clovers as well. Some online sites suggest that the extra leaf foliage is due to a genetic abnormality—if you locate a four-leaf clover in one spot, chances are you’ll find more nearby.

As Christians who believe in a sovereign God, there’s really no such thing as “luck.” We recognize that we are in the hands of a loving Savior who has ordered our lives for His glory and purposes. We do, however, experience many blessings from Him—gifts from the Father of Lights, privileges that I seek to highlight in this blog every week.

One of those gifts is perception. I do believe that God has given my daughter a remarkable talent for detecting “outliers” and dimensional patterns. Don’t try to play the card game “Set” with her—she’s lightning-fast at grabbing the designs that fit into certain patterns, just like seeing that six-leaf clover among millions of three-leaf fronds.

If you’re not terribly perceptive, or if you think you don’t have any particular gifts or talents, think again. Ask God to open your eyes to see what He has given you. His Holy Spirit specializes in providing amazing gifts.

Can you work with your hands? Put them to use for His purposes today. Are you a good listener? Take time to help a friend with a problem, simply by listening. Do you have a Bible? Wow, you have a great treasure…read it right now. Can you make a sandwich or ladle some soup into a bowl? Help serve a meal to the homeless. Can you read and write? Jot a note of encouragement and mail it.

So you’re not a billionaire, a Super Bowl contender, a lottery winner (or maybe you are)…but you can call yourself as rare and privileged as a six-leaf clover if you see how Jesus Himself has bestowed His gifts on you. Ask Him to show you today how you can be a blessing to others!

Father of Lights, from whom all blessings and gifts flow, open our eyes to the extraordinary blessings You have placed in our hearts, homes, and hands. What a wonderful world we would have if all of us used Your gifts to Your glory! Let us rejoice today in Your privileges and use them, as good stewards, to advance Your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. Hi. My name is Kim. I’ve been just as your daughter has been my entire life. I’m 51 years old, but I feel like I’m still 16. Forever young at heart, I suppose. I have always been able to find four leaf clovers very easily, as she said, you just see things differently and the patterns jump out at you. Yesterday I had the experience of finding a six leaf clover. I”be found a few five leaves before, but this six leaf was very special. I felt something in it that was different. I’m going through a very hard time in my life right now, so I believe that it was God’s way of showing me to just keep the Faith and keep moving forward. You have no idea how refreshing it is to know that there is someone else out there that is like me, at least in one way. Thank you so much. Many Blessings to yo

    • How sweet of you to share your story! Wow, I’ve never found a six-leaf clover before! I do believe God sends us little blessings like this to remind us that He has good plans for us, regardless of our current circumstances. Kim, I’ll pray for you right now–that our Lord will shield you from the fiery darts of Satan and comfort you with His Holy Spirit as you tread through these thorny paths. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
